Studying a vocational course that includes practical placement?

Whether you’re about to begin your first placement or just curious about what’s involved, it’s normal to feel a mix of excitement and nerves. Placement can be a valuable part of your learning experience, helping you build confidence, apply your knowledge, and get a feel for your future workplace.

At AIWT, many of our nationally recognised qualifications include a mandatory practical placement component, which forms a key part of your training. Here’s what you can generally expect, plus some tips to help you make the most of it.

What is practical placement?

Practical placement is a period of structured, supervised learning in a real-world setting, such as:

A childcare centre.
An aged care facility.
A disability support service.
A community organisation.
A workplace health and safety environment.

It’s your opportunity to apply what you’ve learned in class, gain hands-on experience, and observe experienced professionals in action.

How long is placement?

The required placement hours vary depending on the qualification. For example:

The CHC30121 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care includes a minimum of 200 hours in an early learning setting.
The CHC33021 Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing and Disability) also includes at least 120 hours of work placement.
The CHC50121 Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care requires a minimum of 300 hours of placement in a relevant community services organisation.

What to expect on placement

Every placement is different, but you can generally expect to:

Observe real work practices relevant to your course.
Follow the guidance of your supervisor or mentor.
Participate in tasks under supervision (once you’re ready).
Reflect on your experiences through assessment tasks or journals.
Meet professional expectations around conduct, dress code, punctuality, and confidentiality.

It’s a supportive environment, but also a professional one, you’re there to learn, but also to contribute.

Tips to make the most of your placement

Be prepared
Read your placement guidelines, review course content, and know what’s expected before you start.
Ask questions
Your placement is a chance to learn, don’t be afraid to ask your supervisor or trainer if something is unclear.
Be professional
Arrive on time, dress appropriately, and be respectful. How you show up matters.
Stay open to feedback
You’re not expected to know everything, but you are expected to be open to learning.
Reflect on what you learn
Take notes, reflect on challenges, and celebrate small wins. It all contributes to your growth.
