Could Your AIWT Course Be Tax Deductible? Here’s What the ATO Says

As the end of the financial year approaches, it’s a good time to check whether your course fees might be tax deductible.

We’re not tax agents or financial advisors, so we can’t give you personal advice. But we can point you to information on the ATO’s official website, and here’s what they say about self-education expenses.

What Are Self-Education Expenses?

According to the ATO, self-education expenses are the costs you incur when you:

  • Undertake courses at an educational institution (whether or not they lead to a formal qualification)
  • Undertake courses provided by a professional or industry organisation
  • Attend work-related seminars or conferences
  • Participate in self-paced learning or study tours, in Australia or overseas

When Are You Eligible to Claim?

You may be able to claim a tax deduction for your course if there’s a direct connection between your current work and the course you’re undertaking.

The ATO explains that self-education expenses are deductible if the course:

  • Maintains or improves skills or knowledge you need in your current job, or
  • Is likely to lead to increased income in your current employment

To be clear: deductions generally apply to upskilling within your current role, not retraining for a completely new career.

Want to Claim in This Financial Year?

To include course fees in your 2024–25 tax return, the payment needs to be made by 30 June 2025, even if you plan to start the course later.

Please Remember: We always recommend checking with a registered tax agent or contacting the ATO directly to make sure you’re eligible to claim. Everyone’s situation is different.
