Tips for Balancing Work, Study and Everyday Life
Balancing work and study doesn’t have to mean burnout. Here are 6 realistic tips to help you study, work, and still make time for life with support from AIWT.
Juggling work and study? You’re not alone.
Many AIWT students are working part-time or even full-time while completing their courses. Whether you’re supporting a family, paying the bills, or changing careers, balancing work, study, and life is a real challenge – but it’s absolutely possible.
Here are six practical tips to help you study while working (and still have energy left for yourself at the end of the week).
1. Choose a course with flexible options
Look for training that fits around your schedule. At AIWT, many of our nationally recognised qualifications offer:
- Blended learning (a mix of face-to-face and online).
- Day and evening classes (depending on course).
- Practical placements arranged to support your availability.
AIWT offers nationally recognised qualifications in areas such as:
- Early Childhood Education and Care
- Aged Care
- Community Services
- Work Health and Safety
- Business
- Real Estate
- Translating and Interpreting
2. Time-block your week (and stick to it)
Planning your time is one of the biggest game-changers. Use a digital calendar or printable planner to block out:
- Your work shifts.
- Study hours.
- Placement or class time.
- Breaks and personal time.
Even setting aside 1–2 focused sessions per week can keep you on track without sacrificing everything else.

3. Don’t aim for “perfect” – aim for consistent
Working students often fall into the trap of thinking they need to be perfect. The truth? Consistency > Perfection.
If you:
- Submit assignments on time (even if they’re not 10/10).
- Chip away at study every week.
- Ask for help when needed.
…you’re doing great. Give yourself credit – progress is the goal.
4. Use your commute or lunch breaks wisely
Even short pockets of time can make a difference. Try using:
- 20 mins on the bus for revision flashcards.
- Your lunch break to review a reading or lesson.
- A podcast or audio resource while driving or walking.
Studying smarter, not harder, will help you make the most of limited time.
5. Ask for support early
Whether it’s your manager, your trainer, or your family, don’t be afraid to ask for flexibility or support.
At AIWT, our trainers and student support team are here to help you navigate the ups and downs of juggling work and study. Don’t wait until you feel overwhelmed, check in early and often.
6. Protect your personal time
It’s easy to burn out when your to-do list never ends. Make time each week (even a small window) to do something that’s just for you, whether that’s:
- Going for a walk.
- Reading something fun.
- Watching a movie.
- Spending time with your kids, friends, or pets.
Looking after your wellbeing helps you stay motivated and focused in the long run.

Studying while working isn’t easy, but it is achievable with the right mindset, structure, and support.
