How to Get Ready for Study After a Long Break
Feeling nervous about going back to study after time away? These simple tips can help you feel confident, prepared, and ready to succeed at AIWT.
Returning to study after a break? You’re not alone.
Whether it’s been a few years since you last studied, or a few decades, the idea of going back to the classroom can feel exciting and overwhelming at the same time.
At AIWT, many of our students are mature-age learners, career changers, or parents returning to the workforce. The good news is: you don’t have to be “perfectly prepared” to get started, but a little planning can go a long way.
Here are some simple tips to help you feel more confident as you return to study.
1. Ease into study mode
Start getting into the habit of reading, writing, or learning again, even before your course begins. You could:
- Set aside a few quiet hours each week.
- Read about your industry of interest.
- Watch short educational videos or listen to podcasts.
This gentle reintroduction helps train your brain to focus, especially if it’s been a while.
2. Set up your study space
A comfortable, organised study space can make a big difference to your motivation and mindset. Try to find a spot that’s:
- Quiet and clutter-free.
- Has good lighting.
- Equipped with the basics (notebook, charger, pens, etc.).
You don’t need a fancy setup, just something functional and distraction-free.
3. Plan your routine
Balancing study with work, family, or other responsibilities? Now’s the time to plan your schedule.
Look at:
- When your classes or placement will happen.
- What support you may need (childcare, transport, etc.).
- Where you can set realistic weekly goals.
Having a plan reduces stress and helps you feel in control.

4. Reach out early
You don’t have to wait until the course begins to ask questions. At AIWT, our team is here to support you before, during, and after enrolment.
Whether you want to understand course requirements, talk about placement, or get help with digital tools, we’re only a phone call or email away.
5. Be kind to yourself
If it’s been a while since you’ve studied, remember: it’s okay not to know everything. Learning is a process, and you’re allowed to take your time, ask questions, and make mistakes.
Returning to study is a big step, and just by exploring your options, you’re already making progress.
