What Is an Early Childhood Teacher?
An early childhood teacher (ECT) is a qualified educator who teaches and supports children in the 0–5 age group, typically in long day care centres, kindergartens, and preschools. Unlike early childhood educators who usually hold a Certificate III or Diploma, early childhood teachers require a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education.
They’re responsible for:

But don’t worry, you don’t need a degree to start. You can begin working and studying with a certificate iii in early childhood education and care or diploma of early childhood education and care, and build your way up to a teaching qualification over time.
Step 1: Start with a Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care
The CHC30121 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care is the entry-level qualification for working in early learning centres and child care services.

This course teaches you how to:
- Support children’s wellbeing and development

After completing this course, you can work as an early childhood educator and later progress to the Diploma and eventually to a degree in early childhood teaching.
Step 2: Progress to the Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care
The CHC50121 Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care builds on the Certificate III and allows you to:
- Lead rooms or programs in early learning centres
- Supervise and mentor junior educators
- Design and deliver educational curriculums
- Take on greater responsibility in centre operations
Many universities recognise the Diploma as a pathway qualification, meaning you may be eligible for credit transfer into a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education, reducing both the time and cost of your degree.
Step 3: Study a Bachelor’s Degree to Become a Qualified Teacher
To officially work as an early childhood teacher, you’ll need to complete an approved early childhood teaching degree (usually 3–4 years). These are often offered through universities or higher education institutions, either on campus or online.
If you’ve already completed a Certificate III and Diploma:
- You’ll enter your degree with practical experience and confidence
- You may receive RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) or credit for some subjects
- You may find it easier to balance work and study, as you can continue working in the field while progressing your education
